It would be nearly impossible for the New York Yankees not to be frustrated after an extra-innings loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at home on Opening Day. On Saturday, they had a chance to pick up their first win of the season. Corey Kluber also had an opportunity to prove to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman that he was worth the contract signed on January 27th that brought the thirty-four-year-old right-hander to The Bronx.
On Saturday at The House That Ruth Built, Kluber showed flashes of what he used to be but overall struggled with command. He lasted four innings, allowing five hits, three walks, and one run.
In the second inning, the Yankees broke through, scoring the first run of the game. In the third, Toronto tied it. In his final inning, Kluber held the Jays scoreless. The Yanks posted two runs in the bottom of the fourth, one of which came from a Gary Sanchez solo home run. The Jays responded in the top of the fifth, posting another run.
The Yankees broke through again in the bottom of the sixth, posting another two runs. As they did all game, Toronto responded. The Jays scored another run in the seventh but were shut down the rest of the way.
The Yankees pulled out the win, defeating Toronto 5-3. Jonathan Loáisiga, Lucas Luetge, Darren O’Day, and Chad Green pitched for the Yankees.
The Bombers will take on the Blue Jays to close out the series and potentially win it on n Sunday, with first pitch set for 1:05 PM Eastern Time.
