On how his body feels and what he thinks of the inside linebacker position as a whole
“My body feels good right now. Coming off last week it was a pretty tough week. A bunch of us got sick. I got sick. That was a little bit tough to kind of get back in the flow of things. My body feels really good right now. It’s a process. It’s always a race to get recovered. My body feels good right now and the inside linebacker group is a little beat up right now with Nick (Henrich) and (Garrett) Snodgrass out, but Ernest (Hausmann) and Chris (Kolarevic) came in and played great snaps for us this last week.”
On Ernest Hausmann’s first start
“He’s a beast. As a true freshman coming in and playing like how he played was impressive. He knows his stuff extremely well and he’s a really athletically gifted player. He played really well. There was some plays he wanted back, but I had some missed tackles. We played a really mentally clean game. We just needed to finish through tackles and finish plays. That was across the room for the inside linebackers. Overall he played really good.”
On correcting tackling
“Always just training to finish. Just grabbing cloth when you get to that runner. It’s all how close can you get to that ball carrier when I’m running up to him. It’s all just about finishing the play.”
On having a game back on a normal schedule
“It’s really nice. The Ireland trip was a blast. It was a really cool experience but it’s really good to be on a normal Monday through Friday schedule.”
On Georgia Southern’s offense
“It’s definitely different. We just kind of brushed up on it this morning. They are going to do some different things. We just have to dial up our game plan and be very good with our eyes this week.”
On the team’s familiarity with Georgia Southern’s offense
“Not a crazy amount. What they are going to do is what they’re going to do. We just kind of brushed up on the game plan this morning. We haven’t gotten a full scouting report yet. As the week goes on we will dive more into what they do and how they do it. It’s going to be a different test than what we’ve been used to the last two games.”
On integrating the transfers in to the defense
“It’s always different when you get live bullets and playing real opponents. All the new guys have done a great job. If I try to name them all I’m going to miss a couple. They have done a great job fitting in to our team and culture. I can’t say enough good things about our new guys. I can’t think of one that’s been a bad addition. I love them all.”
On if the defense is all on the same page
“It’s still a process. We have a lot of guys playing that didn’t play last year. It’s always a process in getting more and more comfortable as the season progresses. If someone goes down you have to get used to that new guy and how they communicate and see things. It’s never going to be completely perfect.”
On practicing against starters
“Our scouts do a great job but it’s different when you’re going against a starting offense. It’s a better game feel when we do our speed looks. It’s a good look when we go goods versus goods.”
On what the defense in general needs to improve
“As always it’s communication on the defensive side and making sure we are figuring out everything correctly. Half the battle for a defense is adjusting to what the offense is presenting us. When you have your feet on the ground and you know your responsibility it’s hard to have a bad snap. That’s our biggest challenge.”
