I wanted to get this one out of the way early because it already hurts to type this. Greiss has been one of, if not the most solid and consistent goaltender the Islanders have seen in quite some time. Playing behind now Boston Bruin Jaroslav Halak, Golden Knights Robin Lehner, and Semyon Varlamov, Greisser has been almost the exact definition of a clutch goaltender, despite being a backup. Greiss made 31 appearances this year, grabbing himself a decent 16-9-4 record with 2.74 goals against and a .913 save percentage. The former Jennings trophy winner (along with Robin Lehner) showed his dedication to the Islanders club many times throughout his tenure on Long Island. He would also play at his absolute best for the Islanders in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, securing a shutout in a Game 7 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers to clinch the Islanders’ first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 1993. Unfortunately, we all know the reality that he will not be around next season, as the Islanders will be looking to the future between the pipes with Ilya Sorokin making his long-awaited jump to the NHL. from the perspective of the Islanders fans, we can all probably agree that we wish Greisser nothing but the absolute best in the remainder of his time in the NHL, and hopefully, as long as fans will be permitted for the 2020-21 season, we can all embrace his homecoming and remind him how much we all appreciated his service to the New York Islanders.
