Opening Statement…
“First of all, I want to take my hat off to these players, these coaches, and this administration for believing in me. This was early when this happened, I had to take this team over. One thing I can say is that they fought. They fought every Saturday they came out. Nobody can deny that. It is something we asked them, and something we expected out of them. You talk about a high character team. I love them for that. I love these coaches for that, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. They finished something they started, and that’s what we asked them to do.”
On beating Iowa for the first time in eight years…
“I’m happy for them because they hadn’t beaten them in a while. I said to them ‘You guys let Wisconsin off last week, let’s not let these guys off.’ You can say that they believed in one another, and they kept quiet.”
On what this moment means to the guys in the locker room…
“It’s big. They are going out a winner, they won their last game. Every loss was hard on them, but they understood why we lost. We said ‘Hey, we have to play 60 minutes of really good football, and we have to play from the beginning to the end.’ Last week in Wisconsin, we had to played 56 minutes, but we played 60 minutes today. That’s how you need to finish in this conference.”
On Nebraska’s fanbase…
“These fans are unbelievable, and I appreciate their support for me and the team. They came out tonight in numbers, and they were screaming and yelling. I’m glad I was able to get that win for them. We have the best fan base in America, and I think everybody knows that.”
