Iowa DC Phil Parker Quotes 8/12/22

Phil Parker

University of Iowa

Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs

On what Quinn Schulte brings to the team…

“Quinn has done a good job. We had Jack (Koerner) there the year before and I think Jack showed him the way a little bit for how to go about preparing for games and practice. Quinn has done a really good job, knowing what is going on and where to be, he’s made some great plays. I’m pleased how he has developed so far.”

On Logan Lee…

“Logan’s done a great job inside. I think our front four guys are competing, that is how I look at it. Four or more, I think we’re getting closer to eight to 10 guys who have a chance to play and rotate the line. I’ve seen a lot of progress and Logan Lee is a great leader. The enthusiasm and positive energy has been great every day.”

On summer progress…

“There’s no question. There are a lot of guys, I’ve told the defensive unit the other day. There’s leadership up front, at the linebacker level, and also in the back end. It’s probably the best leadership we’ve had in a long time. I’ve been very impressed.”

On Aaron Graves…

“Aaron, he’s a guy that is obviously very talented. We liked him in high school when he came here. He’s got good size so far. He’s still learning what is going on, talking about the younger guys in here. Can he help us? Yeah, he is one of those guys that, could he be the ninth or 10th guy in the game. We are very pleased with the progress and maturity, just the way he is. A very positive kid.”

On Parker staying at Iowa for so long…

“I look at the opportunities across the country and I’ve been with some guys that have been in multiple places. They have a different lifestyle than what I chose. When I first came here, I knew that coaches stayed here for long periods of time. For my family that is what I thought was best, and for my coaching profession. I’ve seen a lot of guys have to leave their jobs due to financial situations and sometimes for being fired and they have to move on. I just didn’t like that as I see their kids grow up with them.  To me, it was about staying in a stable situation, working for one of the best coaches in the country. You have to make sure you are happy where you are at. I’m very pleased to be here. It’s been a great opportunity for me. I think some guys are always looking for other jobs and not taking care of the job they have.”

On Riley Moss coming back…

“I’m very pleased that he is coming back. He made that decision at the end of last year to come back. He talked to me, thinking of going to the NFL. We talked about improving his game a little bit more, his maturity. I’m really pleased with how he came back and the leadership he has brought to the back end. He’s done very well with how he’s gone about his work. Usually when you have a guy that is defensive back of the year, he might want to slack off. He’s in meeting rooms, in offices of the program, he’s really working his butt off to be better. Athletically, he was good within his first couple of years. Now he’s taking the steps in understanding the game, seeing the big picture, and the leadership, encouragement and toughness he brings to our defense.”
