On the interior defensive line during the Northwestern game
“We really slowed down. There was a bunch of us that were trying to make a big plays against Northwestern and being over aggressive. Throughout last week we really focused on doing our job and knowing that the guy next to me is going to do his job as well and the tackles will come to us.”
On the balanced snap count keeping the guys fresher
“Yeah Coach Dawson knows what he’s doing. I trust what he wants to do. I think with Northwestern being the first game we all got to get used to game-like scenarios because it’s a lot different than practice. I think we did a lot better this past weekend.”
On what the acclimation process is like
“It’s great to see the new guys with live bullets. We didn’t really know what they could do. They looked good in fall camp and we were just waiting to see what they could do in game-like situations. They came to play and I think they’d played really well on Saturday and we can only get better from here.”
On reminders that they are still young
“They might miss an assignment within a play but they’ve really locked in. That rarely happens now. Like I said I am really proud of those guys. They have come in and taken it seriously and bought in to our culture.”
On the challenge of preparing for Georgia Southern’s offense
“Knowing that it is not just going to be a pass game. The first main goal is to stop the run. A lot of teams when they see that their ears pin back and they think every play is going to be a pass play until one gashes you on a run. That’s going to be our biggest thing. Play level and cool-headed and understand that these guys can still run the ball. They have pretty solid offense and offensive line.”
On the team’s previous experience with Georgia Southern’s quarterback
“He was a smart quarterback. He definitely knew how to command the offense and knew how to play the run gaps. He’s a sixth-year guy so he knows what he’s doing. We have to prepare for him even better.”
On one-on-one’s in practice
“Of course. We always welcome that. I think iron sharpens iron so it’s really great for our one’s to go against the offensive one’s so we can keep getting better and better.”
On what changed between the first and second half against North Dakota
“When we had that sixteen play drive it was just guys not doing their job. We have been saying that for what feels like the last two years. It’s the little details and guys not doing their job. Going in at halftime Coach Chinander just reminded us that everyone needs to do their one job and we will be a successful defense. I think it showed in the second half.”
On bouncing back from a tough loss
“Just motivation. Nobody likes being 3-9. It’s just motivation that we finally have to get that one extra edge where we can start winning these one-possession and one-score games. That starts in practice and begins with the energy and tempo we bring.”
On how to make the run defense better
“It all starts with the defensive line. I can say this personally but I haven’t been as physical as I know I can be. I think it starts there and starts with us.”
On what he is going to work on specifically
“I think I tend to kind of have a lateral step instead of a vertical step. When you play with a guy that’s coming at you on a straight it’s easier for him to knock me off the ball. It’s also pad-level for me. I think I’ve been playing with high pad-level these last two games. It starts with practice and we’ve got to really focus on that and bring it the game on Saturday.”
On having a normal practice week
“Coach Frost and the whole staff did a great job last week. There was no really change to last week.”
