The New York Islanders need to turn it around, and they need to do it soon.
Saturday night at the Nassau Coliseum was nothing short of a lazy and pathetic effort from the Isles, which doesn’t happen too often.
The Washington Capitals controlled the game from puck drop, scoring the first two goals of the game. The Islanders got one back on the power-play thanks to Anthony Beauvillier. In the second period, Adam Pelech scored a shorthanded goal, tying the game at two apiece.
The Isles only scored one goal from there and lost the game 6-3.
While it wasn’t the best game Isles netminder Ilya Sorokin has ever played, the defensive effort in front of him was absolutely unacceptable. Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri have looked completely invisible. While they are new to this team and still need to gel with their new teammates, it is certainly fair to expect some sod of improvement since they joined the Isles.
The sluggish Isles needed a win and couldn’t get it, making Tuesday night in Washington even more critical. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM Eastern Time. A win against the Caps down the stretch is imperative.
