After taking away the iconic logo of Chief Wahoo not too long ago, the “Indians” will now be changing their nickname, as first reported by the New York Times. The 105-year-old nickname made its debut with the franchise in 1915 and has stuck ever since. Multiple unnamed sources claim that the club may wear the name for one final season in 2021 as they begin the active search of a new team nickname for the 2022 campaign.
There had been early discussions within the organization around July in regards to lengthy meetings, regarding whether or not the club would follow through with a name change. As we have seen with the Washington Football Team, getting a new identity does not happen overnight. Perhaps the world will be introduced to the Cleveland Baseball Team? Only time will tell.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
